Places to See
Wat Arun (The Temple of Dawn)
One of the most recognized towering spires in Southeast Asia symbolizes the birth of the Rattanakosin Period and is very different from all the other temples in the area. We recommend going to see the temple around sunset because it’s completely lit up and portrays the most stunning view.
Dusit Palace
This grand palace was King Rama V’s primary residence and among one of the top places to visit in Bangkok due to the differences in architecture. Bonus: If you visit the Grand Palace first, you can keep your ticket for free entry into the Vimanmek Mansion (the main structure) at Dusit Palace.
Grand Palace
Visit the royal palace complex where the Jade Buddha is located and an area that is still utilized for important ceremonies including accommodating heads of state. Keep in mind that a strict dress code is enforced since it is considered Thailand’s most sacred site.
Things to Do
Rent a bike at Bang Krachao
Escape the busy city and explore Bang Krachao, an island that is located in the middle of Chao Phraya River. Rent a bike and grab a map to explore the island. You may get lost, but it’s an island! You’ll find your way back, eventually 😉
Meditate at Wat Mahathat
Whether you’re familiar with meditation or not, you can definitely learn a thing or two from the monks. They offer free walk-in classes so you can gain some insight into this peaceful ritual.
Go Shopping at the Chatuchak Weekend Market
One of the most popular stops for tourists to shop due to the huge size of it! There are 35 acres that contain more than 8,000 market stalls featuring clothing, ceramics, plants, collectibles and much more. Brush up on your negotiation skills in order to receive the best bargain.
Check Out The Nightlife Scene
Bangkok is known for their electrifying nightlife and respectively has been rated one of the best in the world. Many international DJs rock the clubs with their latest hits after hours. Check out some of the popular clubs like Khao San and RCA.
Experience Tranquility in Lumpini Park
Much like New York City’s Central Park, Lumpini Park offers Bangkokians an outdoor area for a mix of activities. Get a quick workout in or simply people watch in this large area of lush treetops. Beware of the reptiles slinking throughout the area!

Tried Thai food back home and weren’t a fan? Make sure you indulge in some authentic Thai food while visiting. From the dozens of street vendors to sit down restaurants, it’ll be hard to choose where exactly to go!
Night Food Stall Street
If you’re looking for some of the best local vendors serving pad thai, sticky rice, egg noodles and more, you’ll find it on Soi 38. Starting at 6 p.m. you can walk the street to survey your options from a dozen different carts. Most vendors will even bring your dish to your table!
Bunker
A casual fine dining restaurant that reflects a more American fare. Enjoy homemade pasta or sea bass on the third floor along the balcony for a great view of the city.
Sensi
Relish in classic Italian dishes approached from surprisingly innovative angles at this modern addition to Bangkok. You can select items a la carte or choose a seven-course tasting menu that gets you a little bit of everything.
Quench Your Thirst
Grabbing a drink in Bangkok may just be the highlight of your trip due to the beautiful views you can’t see anywhere else.
Sky Bar
Located at State Tower is where you’ll find this bar on the 63rd floor overlooking the Chao Phraya River. If you’re a fan of the movie Hangover 2, you’ll want to check out this rooftop that hosted the boys during filming. Don’t forget to try the Hangovertini which was inspired by the movie!
360 Rooftop Bar
The bar itself is located at Millennium Hilton and consists of two very different areas to enjoy drinks. One area is rectangular and open, while the other is a 360 degrees cupola sitting a floor above. Enjoy a sophisticated evening lounging in one of the sofas with a cocktail list that seems to never end.
Above Eleven
Situated 32 floors above Sukhumvit Soi 11 (the premier party street) sits this central park inspired rooftop bar. Creative cocktails with hints of Japanese, New York and Peruvian flare line the menu along with light and refreshing beers.
Things to Know When Traveling to Thailand
Language
Thailand is no stranger to tourists, so don’t worry about learning the entire language. Instead, learn useful phrases that you could see yourself needing frequently. We also suggest learning the WAI bow greeting, which is a polite gesture to show respect.
Currency
The currency in Thailand is the Bacht. Luckily for those that live in the United States, 1 Bacht is currently 0.029 US dollar.
Payment and Tipping
Those living in Thailand typically practice tipping in a three-tier system based on the type of establishment. Street food vendors are typically not tipped unless they are high-street eats. However, tipping at higher-end restaurants is more common. A 10% is generally acceptable.
Transportation
Tuk-Tuks
The most popular mode of transportation for short distances in Thai cities. They carry roughly between 2-3 people and they are found nearly everywhere in Bangkok.
Buses
There are two different types of buses in Thailand, air-conditioned and non-air conditioned. They are both ran by the government.
Taxis/Uber
Both are available.
Weather
While December and January are considered the “cooler” months in Thailand, it’s important to remember that the weather is controlled by a tropical monsoon climate. Average temperatures can range from 70 degrees to 87 degrees.
